I tried to locate a free online pdf copy of this paper, and couldn't find one.

What they seem to have done was to use the built-in photodiode of a laser diode (used for power monitoring) as a controlled heating element for the laser diode chip.
On page 3649 they say: "The thermal control we propose in this article utilizes as a heating element the semiconductor slice of the built-in photodiode which is used for laser optical output monitoring. The built-in monitor photodiode, commonly available in most commercial diode lasers, consists of a chip of rectangular shape deposited directly onto the iron mounting which supports the laser and is placed very near to the emitting source, as shown in Fig. 2 (a)."
So far I haven't located any actual numbers in the paper (in degrees C) to indicate how much heating was involved.

Temperature control is the key, at or near ambient minimizes demands on the TEC and drive. I believe these are TEM 00 but not single longitudinal mode; data sheets can have that mistake. "Single Transverse Mode" TEM 00"

The 50 degrees C is probably the maximum temperature.

After looking at some more datasheets, I think you're right that +50C refers to the maximum, and this seems to be typical of red laser diodes, as shown at:

For red diodes, the operating temperature of 0 - 50C is often given. So this diode seems usual in that respect. On the other hand, I think Dave mentioned that these particular diodes like to run warm, and this may be a useful observation.

Ok finding that once it’s set In SLM, just leave it on ! With my simple driver and only passive cooling remains locked in . Turning it off/on again losses SLM and need a reset...
