sending PMs

I don't know what I am doing wrong
I have written two PMs and have tried to send them. Instead of being sent they are going to outbox. I am almost positive I clicked "submit" and not "save". The messages however appear in my outbox folder and not my sent folder. There is a notation on the message that it was sent at .. time.
I don't think they were actually sent and I can't figure out how to send from the saved folder.
Is there a button or something that I am missing?
update: after I wrote I checked and the second PM I sent has now moved to the sent items, but the first PM I sent is still in the outbox - how do I send from outbox?
